The Mayo Clinic Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) prepares M.D.-Ph.D. students to translate scientific discoveries into applications that improve patient care.

This challenging role requires you to develop the probing analytical skills of basic scientists and the broad knowledge base and diagnostic tools of physicians. Through the MSTP, you will become a highly skilled physician-scientist engaged in leading advances in science and clinical practice.

The M.D.-Ph.D. Program, offered by Mayo Graduate School and Mayo Medical School, has been educating physician-scientists since 1986. In 2003, Mayo Clinic received funding as a Medical Scientist Training Program site from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institute of Health.

The Medical Scientist Training Program benefits from the exceptional clinical training of Mayo Medical School and the extraordinary research resources of Mayo Graduate School. Mayo Clinic is well known for its tradition of integrating patient care, research and education. These connections are reflected throughout the program.
Regarded worldwide as a premier academic medical center, Mayo Clinic has a 100-year history of contributing to the advancement of science and patient care. There are 2,000 scientist and physician faculty readily available to you across Mayo's three campuses. Research resources here are unparalleled.

With more than 500,000 patients each year and medical records and/or tissue specimens from over 6 million patients, Mayo provides the opportunity to access a wealth of clinical material for your research. These factors create a remarkable environment in which to pursue your M.D.-Ph.D.

Students may choose one of the following research programs:

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Biomedical Engineering
Clinical and Translational Science
Immunology
Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
Neurobiology of Disease
Virology and Gene Therapy
