POST-MATCH SCRAMBLE INFORMATION FOR ERAS 2011 IMG PARTICIPANTS
The Post-Match Scramble is a two-day period during which applicants who have not matched to a training position attempt to obtain a position that has not been filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), or the "Match." The 2011 Scramble begins on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Time in the United States, when the list of unfilled positions is released by the NRMP, and ends on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Time in the United States. In order to access the list of unfilled positions, you must be registered with the NRMP by the NRMP's Late Registration Deadline of February 23, 2011.
To apply for unfilled positions during the Scramble, you must use the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). To use ERAS during the Scramble, you must have participated in ERAS 2011 during the regular application season; this means that you must have applied to and paid for at least one ACGME-accredited program during the regular ERAS season, and your AAMC ERAS account must be paid in full by Friday, March 11, 2011. If these requirements are not met, you will not be able to apply to programs until after the Scramble period is over.
It is very important to note that most U.S. residency programs participating in ERAS do not accept documents outside of the ERAS system. Therefore, unless a program gives you specific instructions to submit documents via fax or e-mail, you should submit documents to programs only via ERAS.
During the Scramble, you can use ERAS to apply to a maximum of 45 programs at no cost. This includes programs to which you had applied previously during the regular ERAS application season that appear on the list of unfilled positions.
Effective for the 2011 Scramble, there will be a limit on the number of applications you can submit on a given day. You will not be able to carry over any unused applications to the next day. The limits for submitting applications using ERAS for the 2011 Scramble are:
Tuesday, March 15, 2011 – you may submit a total of 30 applications
Wednesday, March 16, 2011 – you may submit a total of 10 applications
Thursday, March 17, 2011 – you may submit a total of 5 applications
You will be able to apply to any combination of new programs and programs to which you applied previously during the regular ERAS application season, provided you do not exceed the daily application limits listed above.
The Scramble is an intense period during which ERAS Support Services at ECFMG will transmit thousands of documents to the ERAS PostOffice. Once the Scramble has started, ERAS Support Services will not scan and upload any additional documents. Therefore, if you have new supporting documents that you want to use during the Scramble, they must be submitted in time to arrive at ECFMG by March 1 (see item 4 below).
If you have used ERAS 2011 to apply to at least one ACGME-accredited program and you want to use ERAS to apply to programs during the Scramble, simply access the NRMP's list of unfilled positions from the NRMP website once the Scramble has started and apply to programs.
If you have not yet applied to any ACGME-accredited programs using ERAS 2011 and you want to participate in the Scramble, you must complete the following before the start of the Scramble:
1. Obtain an ERAS Token via ECFMG's On-line Applicant Status and Information System (OASIS). This Token is required to register with ERAS ( www.aamc.org/eras ).
2. Register with the NRMP by 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time in the United States on Wednesday, February 23, 2011.
3. Register with ERAS ( www.aamc.org/eras ), and complete your MyERAS application, Profile, and Personal Statement. Note that once you have certified your MyERAS application, you will not be able to make any changes. However, you can update your Profile, Personal Statement, and document assignments during the Scramble.
4. Submit any supporting documents to ERAS Support Services at ECFMG in time to arrive at ECFMG by March 1, 2011. ERAS Support Services at ECFMG will scan all documents received and upload them to the ERAS PostOffice. Processing time for documents depends on the volume of documents received; therefore, you must submit documents as soon as possible. Once the Scramble has started, ERAS Support Services will not scan and upload any additional documents.
5. Apply to and pay for at least one ACGME-accredited program via ERAS by March 11, 2011. ERAS Support Services at ECFMG strongly urges you to apply no later than March 8, 2011.
6. Access the NRMP's list of unfilled positions from the NRMP website once the Scramble has started and apply to unfilled programs. You must be registered with the NRMP by February 23, 2011 to access the list of unfilled positions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There are companies that offer, for a fee, to assist medical students/graduates, particularly international medical students/graduates (IMGs), with securing a U.S. residency training position. ECFMG, AAMC, and NRMP are not associated with, nor do they endorse any such companies. ECFMG, AAMC, and NRMP are designated to facilitate the ERAS application and Match processes. ECFMG is the designated Dean's office for IMGs. As such, representatives of ERAS Support Services at ECFMG are available by telephone and e-mail to guide IMGs through the process.
